For many people, the Republic of Moldova is a blank spot on the map – at most, it has recently appeared in the headlines as a neighboring country of Ukraine and a border region of Europe. Yet this small country has much more to offer: it is multilingual and, in addition to the majority Moldovans, is also a country of origin for people in the Transnistria and Gagauzia regions. It is precisely at these points of contact that different histories and lifestyles come together, making the country such an impressive example – of a post-Soviet region, of a sparsely urbanized agricultural country, of a country of migration and of one that has often been caught between empires and now has to find its way between Russian aggression and European promises. In this respect, a unanimous view of Moldova is hardly possible, so that the lecture addresses the diversity, but also the dividing lines and conflicts, and makes them tangible by means of ethnographic insights and some visual material from the work on site. Jana Stöxen is a research assistant at the Chair of Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Regensburg and deals with the Republic of Moldova from a migration studies perspective. She has been in Moldova regularly since 2018 and spent several months doing field research there in 2023.
